Special Education is a system put in place by educators to provide additional services, support, programs and specific environments for students with special needs. Special Education focuses on children who need some help, special coaching and care to meet their educational goals. These children may be mentally retarded, physically handicapped or have emotional or behavioral problems.
As a result, teachers must be specially trained to teach these children and able to identify and understand their special needs. Due to the nature of field of Special Education, to become a special education teacher, it is required that you complete a teacher education certificate along with a Bachelors or Masters degree in Special Education.

Types of Special Education Degree

Bachelors: In the Bachelors program, the format of the course is tailored to meet the needs of students and enhance your teaching style. Due to the diverse field of Special Education, students are required to study general teacher education subjects from the along with an area of specialization. The course requires a 16 week teaching course and an 8 week teaching course in a school for students with disabilities. The school must include at least 3 of the following disability categories: mental retardation, learning disability, emotional disabilities, and physical or health difficulties. All of the teaching experience must be completed under the supervision of a specialized teacher.

Masters: The Master of Education in Special Education is designed for educators who are already certified and wish to advance their studies in the field of Special Education. The courses are delivered by experienced professionals in their respective fields who are prepared to divulge their knowledge and experiences in the area of learning disabilities, mental retardation, emotional and physical disabilities. Participants must have access to a class of children with special needs to be able to complete all assignments given during the course.

PhD: The PhD program is mostly research-based and focuses on topics surrounding Special Education. Students are required to make presentations of their research at the local, regional and sometimes national level in order to show progress in the development of your particular field of specialization. Some of the areas of research may focus on:

Early childhood programs tailored for children and their families to cope with the wide range of difficulties involving special needs children.
High incidence programs tailored to assist children and adolescents who have learning disabilities, behavioral disorders or mental retardation.
Severe disabilities programs geared toward children and young adults with severe intellectual disabilities.
