One way of doing this is by pursuing a degree in Curriculum and Instruction, in which you deal with issues of learning, teaching and social justice at the local and global levels. Types of Curriculum and Instruction Degrees

A degree in Curriculum and Instruction is for a person already in the teaching profession who wishes to improve their teaching skills and methods or specialize in a particular area of education. In this program, you will learn strategies and techniques for assessing performance and providing feedback to students of varying learning abilities. It indulges into methods of developing effective curricula and methods that motivate and energize students to improve their learning.

There are two levels of degree and some advanced certification programs available in Curriculum and Instruction.

Masters Program

In this students are required to:

Complete at least 24 credit hours of course work with a minimum GPA of 3.25. This does not include the 24 hours required for research/thesis and other credit hours to remove any deficiencies or the 12 credit hours required from other department courses.
Complete graduate school research requirement.
Complete a Master’s paper based on a research project approved by the major professor.
Successfully complete the comprehensive Master’s exam which is planned in conjunction with the major professor. It consists of a balance between your specific course in Curriculum and Instruction combined with courses selected from other departments.

PhD Program

This program helps students to:

Become more competent in curriculum development with a better appreciation of the teaching-learning process.
Enhance capabilities in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.
Broaden knowledge in academic related fields.
Apply professional background and training in areas of administration, counseling, educational psychology, supervision and the sociology of education.

The course is pursed under the guidance of a major professor and the dissertation is done under the supervision of a dissertation committee.

Advanced Certification Program

The advanced certification program is target-orientated and tailored for people who want certification in a specific field. It offers advance certification at the post-baccalaureate level in areas such as:

Bilingual certification – which focuses on teaching English as a Second Language.
Institutional technology – which teaches the role of media, such as computers and television, in the classroom.
Reading teacher – which focuses on the teaching of reading

People who have attained an advanced Curriculum and Instruction degree are open to a variety of career opportunities. Some of which include:

Curriculum Developer: is responsible for developing, establishing, implementing and assessing local curriculum for an institution in accordance with government standards. They facilitate improvement in teaching and assessment methods to attain the best results from students.
Learning Consultant: is responsible for managing the learning and development needs of employees in specialized areas of an organization. They give support to the internal staff education and training needs on a wide range of development courses and web-based training, and oversee the proper implementation of this training.
Training and Development Advisor: is as a team player in a training and development organization. You will work in the complete cycle of a training program, from training needs analysis through design and implementation.
Education Consultant: is an individual who assists parents and students with their educational planning.

Salary Levels

Salary levels for people with an advanced degree in the field of Curriculum and Instruction will vary with the area of specialization, qualification and source of employment whether public, private or self employed. Salaries range from around $40,000 to $100,000 per annum.
