Library Technologist

A Library and Media Technologist is an individual who embraces cutting edge technology and imparts this knowledge into a school’s curriculum. They also train other staff members and students on how to use these technologies in conjunction with other library systems. This may include how library resources are utilized and how data is organized. It is a career in which individuals may indulge in the field of education without being deep into direct classroom teaching.

To become a Library and Media Technologist, the qualification varies with the level of employment desired. To work in a small library, it is required to have at least a Bachelors’ degree in this field. For higher positions, like researcher, professionals are required to have a Masters or PhD accompanied by some studies of how people interact with library resources.

Types of Library and Media Technology Degrees

The degree program for Library and Media Technology comes in three levels: Bachelors, Masters and PhD.

Bachelor’s – People entering into the Bachelors program are required to have at least a high school diploma. Also it is recommended that they attain a teaching certificate to complement a degree in Library and Media Technology. The program entails courses in catalog resource, library information architecture, curriculum design, programming and computer science, general library science along with other technologically focused courses. Some work experience will also be done in a library setting to enable students to build their experiences and confidence in a practical environment.

Master’s - In the Masters program, it is required that students have achieved their Bachelors’ degree. Based on the intensity of the program, students must have a thirst for knowledge, enjoy working with new technology and be able to communicate effectively with their colleagues and students alike.

The program is focused around a set of fundamental requirements which seeks to provide a broad perspective in education, research and technology. Some of these areas may include:

Research in education
Issues in school, community and faculty
Principles of teaching and learning
Supervision and assessment of teachers and learners

Apart from general subjects, they must cover courses of specialization. Some of which are:

Obtaining and organizing information resources
Using information resources
Emerging Technologies and School Library Media (SLM) programs.
Administrating and evaluating program resources.
Literature and literacy for children and young adults.

PhD - The PhD in Library and Media Technology will attract individuals who are intent on significantly advancing themselves in the field of Library and Media Technology. It combines the faculties of library and information science in an effort to prepare leaders in the areas of research, education and management. To apply for this degree, students must first acquire a Masters’ degree in this field.

The PhD course entails students preparing an original dissertation in the field of Library and Media Technology which will be assessed by a dissertation committee. They are allowed a maximum of seven years to complete this program.
