My Experience of Becoming a Legal Transcriptionist

As a legal transcriptionist, I am given many responsibilities in addition to acting as a stenographer in a court of law or during legal hearings. I am also required to:

  • Document testimony
  • File motions
  • Generate subpoenas, etc.

When becoming a legal transcriptionist I was required to earn an associate’s degree and get certified by a taking a stenography vocational course. While not all workers in my profession are required to have this level of training, it would be most advantageous for anyone seeking to become a legal transcriptionist to do so.

You can get employment as a legal transcriptionist with experience alone; however gaining experience in this field can be difficult. This is because most legal transcriptionists these days are based at home and telecommute. That is why I attended an online degree program. This, along with my associate’s degree assured me a career in this field.

Skills Needed to Become a Legal Transcriptionist

You must have a basic comprehension of legal terminology in order to qualify as a legal transcriptionist. This is because you will be editing and transcribing legal texts for a variety of employers. So understanding a little about legal studies is important. Another important aspect of this career is having an excellent grasp of English. Formatting skills also come in handy because many employers wanta particularstyle of document formatting that is a legal standard.

Job Responsibilities of a Legal Transcriptionist

Although I work for a law office most of my colleagues are contracted transcriptionists. They do not have to perform the functions of alegal assistant. My employer however, requires me to act as a personal assistant also. I am required to:

  • Schedule meetings,
  • Make phone calls,
  • Act as a general assistant, etc.

While not all legal transcriptionists perform these tasks you may be asked to do so, hence it is a good idea to find out what the employer wants before you accept a job. That way, you can decide whether you are suitable for the task you may be asked to perform.

My Experience of Becoming a Legal Transcriptionist

Some of my co-workers became legal transcriptionists right after they graduated from high school.They started out as interns for law firms and gained experience that way. These law firms then hired them after they had worked for six months in the office. Getting a job this way usually requires connections that I did not have. Therefore I took an online degree course to complete my associate degree then an online legal transcription program, which took another six months to complete.I now feel that the online degree route is the best choice.
