Imparting education to students who are not physically present at the place of teaching in short is distance education. It is an art of teaching which requires the ability of a teacher to forward a curriculum that helps a student at a distant place to read, understand and reproduce.

As we all know that education first began as a one to one communication which later improved as one to many. Next was the involvement of time during which the sharing of knowledge would take place. Slowly with the growing need for education and shortage of institutions grew the culture of students moving from place to place initially and later from country to country. A new trend in imparting education began with this innovative thought of teaching and learning even while not being present at the school or college.

Technological usage is of two types namely Synchronous and Asynchronous. Online delivery of education to participant present at one place is called synchronous technology, while Asynchronous is where students access study materials online at their own pace. While telephone, web and video conferencing is a synchronous use of technology, audio and video cassettes, email and voice mail are asynchronous technologies.
