8 Best ways to select your Online College

June 1st, 2010

Choosing an online college for the pursuit of your tertiary education is one of those decisions that will remain with you for the rest of your life. As a result, students must conduct due diligence when scouting for an online college so that they have no regrets after making their decision. Here we will look at some of the steps students can take to choose the online college that is best for them.

1. Start with knowing who you are and what you want:

It is best to have a career objective that best suits your capabilities. Do a self-search to see what interest you, then compare your weaknesses and strengths against this career goal.

2. Seek the help of a career advisor:

A career advisor is trained to analyze the capabilities of students. Career advisors will be able to offer sound advice on the best college and area of specialization that in their opinion gives the student the best chance of success. Most high schools will have a career advisor or a student’s council department to offer advice to students.

3. Accreditation:

Ensure that whichever online college you choose, that it is accredited by the Department of Education. The Department of Education has several affiliate offices strategically placed all over the country that are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that online colleges adhere to strict educational codes. Students can easily log on to the Department of Education’s website to do a search of their college’s accreditation status.

4. Size does not always matter:

Not all widely known huge setup online colleges are necessarily the best. The important thing is to look at the student to teacher ratio. The student to teacher ratio is an indication of how much contact time you will get with each lecturer. Try and choose with an average value.

5. Record of accomplishments:

It is a fact that some online colleges are recognized more than others. This recognition is based on their track record of graduating highly trained students who are always in demand by employers. By choosing a highly recommended online college, your chance of being employed is automatically increased.

6. Cost:

The cost of education is a major stumbling block for college aspirants. Always ensure that you have the requisite funding for your online college education before starting your pursuit. By starting before securing your financial support, you stand a huge chance of dropping out and losing all the money you previously spent. Students can get financial aid through various government and private funded student loans, scholarships and grants. Always remember to choose an online college that you can afford.

7. Get feedback:

Getting feedback from students who previously attended a particular online college is crucial. They will be able to give a first-hand view of the professionalism of the college and their experiences. However, be careful of those who have a bone to pick with the college as they try to distort the views of the college.

8. Placement support:

Choose an online college that offers complete support. These online colleges will offer employment placement assistance and even financial support should the situation arise.
